The Hurva Synagogue is an ancient structure with the same kind of past as the Temple of Solomon in that it has been been destroyed twice. So, if the 18th-century rabbinic authority, Vilna Gaon, is right, on March 16, 2010, construction will begin on the third Temple. His projection states that the auspicious day will coincide with the third completion of the Hurva Synagogue in Jerusalems Jewish Quarter[1]. The rededication day for the Hurva Synagogue will be March 15, 2010. The Hurva Synagogue was built in the early 1700s, but was torn down by Jewish enemies. It was rebuilt and rededicated again on January 6, 1837. But in 1948, the site was again destroyed by a Jordanian bomb. This is the Hurva Synagogue before its 1948 destruction.
This arch was rebuilt after the 1967 war in anticipation of the complete reconstruction.
This is the Synagogue during construction in 2009.
Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch, rabbi of the Western Wall and Chairman of the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, told Arutz-7, "We accept this additional mission with great responsibility. The Hurva was a very important and central site, and it must be built up to be a site that will bring as many people as possible close to Torah and the Holy Temple." See also Ha' Aretz and Jerusalem Post for more historical details. The question is whether Vilna Gaon was correct in his prophecy that the third time the Synagogue was built so would be the Third Temple. Those who are awaiting the Messiah understand the significance of this event. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem. |
